Things started to go downhill at the OS selection stage – only Centos or Ubuntu were offered as alternatives to Windows and things got even stranger with pricing – a like for like VPS with Linux was 50% more expensive than one with Windows.  Very strange given the zero license costs of the Linux platform, so can only be described as a tax.

This debate is also posing some interesting questions regarding geographical borders online and the “sovereignty” of the internet.  We cry foul when stories of internet censorship in Iran and China, but this is a little closer to home.  In addition to the copyright elements, the legislation also impacts the open source community and companies that produce vpn, encryption, privacy and anonymization software.  Not good news for those seeking freedom from censorship in countries like Iran and China; ironically, some of those efforts are funded by the US government as well.

Yesterday some of the key supporters withdrew from the fight, leading to some ranting on Twitter by one the legislation’s biggest fans, Rupert Murdoch.  This battle might have been won, but the war is far from over.

As reported on the Slashgear website, Linux Mint is now the most popular desktop distribution.  Mint is Myfreedom’s Linux desktop and laptop weapon of choice, too, with Debian meeting all our server needs.

Mint’s success is all the more remarkable considering the small size of the project and the fact it is funded by sponsors and individual donations – this is no Red Hat.

The latest version, Linux Mint 12 “Lisa”, is now available on the Linux Mint website.

Open Source: Its the new Rock and Roll!

I think it serves as a fantastic example of how open source software and open culture works:

I have invested my time in reading, rating and commenting on the content published and now this contribution has been recognised.  This should incentivise me to engage even more as my credibility and reputation builds and eventually the increased exposure will result in an opportunity presenting itself.

Now – instead pretend I am an enthusiastic programmer; my bug-hunting time, testing and increased code contributions will improve my reputation among my peers and the increased exposure will result in a great opportunity presenting itself.

This is the simplest answer I can think of to the question that baffles many IT executives:  ”Why would anyone do this for free”

Why community is essential

The reason Open Source software succeeds in many areas is because it is built around a community.  This fosters a real sense of pride in the developers and the spotlight of  public scrutiny ensures quality as mistakes are identified and fixes made much quicker than in a commercial company.

By throwing many pairs of hands at the project, the pace of development and improvement is accelerated and the sharing of ideas, coupled with open licenses, allow for a higher level of creativity in creating variation, derived works and new applications for existing code.

All of these things benefit us, the users.  So the next time you find something that is great – tell them “great job, thanks” and keep the  community thriving.
